Entrevista exclusiva a Carmen Elise Espenaes de MIdnattsol

Chicos, les dejo mi entrevista con una de las mejores cantantes de la escena actual, es una persona estupenda, me cayó muy bien desde el comienzo y no tuvo ningún problema en aceptar la entrevista. Era más larga pero tuve que acortarla porque Carmen no tenía mucho tiempo, asique el resto de las preguntas serán para la próxima.

A: Escuchando los discos anteriores, me di cuenta que nunca han hecho un álbum conceptual, ¿Metamorphosis será así o prefieren dejarse llevar en la composición?

C: Si, estas en lo cierto, ninguno de los álbumes anteriores fue así, pero yo diría que Metamorphosis es una especie de álbum conceptual aunque no lo planee de esa forma, porque no es como yo trabajo. Me dejé llevar y vi lo que salía de mí, porque quería ser honesta y no muy estructurada. Escribimos las canciones y después de un tiempo comencé a analizar que era lo que quería decir con ellas y al final del proceso me di cuenta que había una línea conectora a través de todas las canciones, que resumo como Metamorphosis Melody.
Todos tratan temas diferentes, muy diferentes de hecho, pero después de escucharlos un par de veces espero que los oyentes puedan apreciar un significado más profundo en el álbum, y les deje un sentimiento especial dentro suyo.

A: ¿Cómo ves la escena del metal en Europa y el resto del mundo? ¿Crees que comenzar una banda en Europa tiene más apoyo que en otros lugares del mundo?

C: Si, creo que si. Imagino que debe ser más fácil que en América Latina, Estados Unidos y otros países, que en Europa. Midnattsol tiene muchos fans en Bélgica, Francia, Alemania y Países Bajos, ya que hay muchos seguidores del metal allí. Pero en Noruega y otros países de Escandinavia es muy difícil ganarse un lugar; a pesar de que hay mucha gente tocando en bandas metaleras, no hay un gran mercado para la venta de esa música. ¡Es muy raro! Por lo tanto creo que depende de cada país en particular.

A: La banda no ha realizado un dueto todavía, pero si tuvieses la posibilidad, ¿con quien te gustaría hacer uno?

C: He cantado algunos temas con mi hermana Liv Kristine, pero nunca fue un verdadero “dueto”, asique me encantaría cantar con ella en el futuro. Nuestras voces encajan muy bien y amo trabajar con ella, siempre nos divertimos, bromeando .
Pero si fuese un cantante no tengo dudas: Vincent de Anathema. El me hechizó en mi juventud con su especial y melancólica voz en la canción “The last Goodbye” del álbum Judgement.
Me enamore de su voz y de la música de la banda, la cual es una de mis favoritas, sería un sueño hacer un dueto con él.

A: Ahora hay más cantantes en el metal, y se apoyan entre ustedes; Eve´s Apple es un ejemplo de ello. ¿Crees que las mujeres han ganado el espacio por el que una vez pelearon o todavía quedan cosas por cambiar en la escena actual?

C: Si estas en lo cierto, Eve´s Apple nos permite mantenernos juntas y es una fantástica forma de apoyarnos entre nosotras. ¡Juntas somos más fuertes!
La escena del metal femenino ha crecido muchísimo en los últimos años y hay una gran diferencia entre el presente y los comienzos, cuando las mujeres en la escena del metal eran algo raro. Todavía recuerdo los primeros meses cuando mi hermana comenzó en TOT; no había muchas mujeres en ese entonces. Ahora los tiempos han cambiado, pero creo que todavía hay gente en contra de la escena femenina del metal, y por ende aún hay un cambio potencial.

1-Listening to your previous albums I realized you´ve never done a conceptual album, Metamorphosis will be like that or you prefer to go with the flow trough the composition?
Carmen: Yes, you`re right, the other two albums weren`t conceptual in that matter, but I would say that our new album The Metamorphosis Melody is a kind of a conceptual album. I hadn`t planned to do it from the beginning or so, I don`t work like that, I have to "let it flow" and see what comes out of me, because I want it to be honest and not too constructed if you know what I mean. So we writing the new songs and after a while I tried to analyze what I wanted to say with this songs, and I noticed at the end of the song writing process, a red line through all the songs, which I sum up as The Metamorphosis Melody. They all have different themes, very different in fact, but after listening a few times, I hope the listeners will have notice a deeper meaning of the album and sit with a special feeling inside.

2-How do you see the actual metal scene in Europe and the rest of the world? Do you think that start a band has more support in Europe than in other places?
Carmen: Yes, I can imagine that it`s harder to have a break through in e.g. America, especially the USA and other countries than in Europe. Midnattsol has a lot of fans in Europe, especially in Belgium, France, Germany and The Netherlands, so there are lots of supporters of the metal scene there. But for example in Norway and other countries in Scandinavia, it`s really difficult to have a break through! Even though there are so many people playing in metal bands, I don`t think I could count all the ones I know playing in a metal band, there isn`t a great market for selling metal music, it`s very strange! So it also depends on the individual country I think.

3-The band haven´t made a duet yet, so if you had the chance, who would you like to make a duet with?
Carmen: I`ve sung on a few songs with my sister Liv Kristine, but it was never a real duet, so I would love to make a duet with her in the future. Our voices fit well together and I just love to work with her, we always have a lot of fun joking around hehe But if I should say a male vocalist, I`ve no doubt: Vincent from Anathema. He enchanted me with his melancolic special voice on the song "The last goodbye" on the album Judgment in my youth, I just fell in love with his voice and the music of Anathema, which is one of my favorite bands till today, and it would be such a dream making a duet with him!

4-Now there are more singers in metal, and you support to each other, Eve´s is a clear example of that. Do you think that women have won the space they once fight for or still are a few things which should change in the actual scene?
Carmen: Yeh, you right, Eve`s Apple let us women stand together and it`s a fantastic way of supporting each other! Together we are strong! The female metal scene has grown a lot in the recent years and there`s a huge difference to earlier when women were rare in the metal scene. I still remember the first months when my sister started in TOT, there weren`t many women presented in the metal scene back then as I can remember. Now times has changed, but I still think that there are people being against female fronted metal, so I think there`s still a changing potential
