Nightwish drummer tours around the world missing sauna.
Who are you and when and where were you born?
- I'm Jukka Nevalainen. I was born in Kitee April 21, 1978. Well, actually I was born in a hospital in Joensuu, but my native town is officially Kitee, because my parents lived there at that point. I play drums in Nightwish.
What did your parents say when you decided to join a heavy metal band?
- My whole family has always supported me with my music activities. Of course they suggested that I should get an education for a "real" occupation and I always thought also myself that I could do something else among the music.
Did you ever expect that Nightwish would become this famous?
- No. We have never had any big plans like "the next album has to sell twice as much as the previous" or "the next tour will be our most successful tour". Of course we always hoped and still hope for a good reception and success, but I've never tried to be successful at any cost. It's much nicer to work in a way that it feels good and if the result is good, like it has been with Nightwish, it is rewarding.
What has been the most interesting concert place?
- There are many places that are interesting in their own way and I can't list them all. But let's say, for example, the concert in a club called White Rabbit in San Antonio, Texas, USA. It's an old Mexican style club in the middle of a dry country side. It was a hot day and the air conditioning didn't work very well. The toilet / shower room was full of 7 cm long cockroaches and its door had a hole that was as big as a head, as the result of the previous party. Usually it's nice to go to the shower after a concert and hot day, but this time there was no rush.
Do you rather play for 80,000 people in a stadium or for 700 people in a club?
- Both have pros and cons. Of course it’s great to play in front of a huge audience, but it's also great to tour for example in the United States and play for 600 to 2000 people. In a big concert it feels like a huge party when the audience participates. And of course the big concerts are more profitable. But sometimes it feels a bit distant in big concerts. It's much easier to interact with the audience in smaller arenas.
Do you have any rituals before the concert?
- I always put the concert costume on about half an hour before the show. Then I do a brief warm-up, practice a bit with the sticks and eat some chips.
How often do you drop a stick in the middle of a concert and what do you do, when it happens?
- It happens occasionally. I've learned to replace the stick quickly, so usually only the ones who happen to watch me at that time will notice it. I want to have fun during the concert and I roll the sticks while playing and sometimes I lose the grip. But it's a part of the live concert.
What's the biggest difference between the early tours and later tours?
- The biggest difference is in the technical side. In the beginning it was luxury, if we had a couple of moving lights. Now we need a truck for the equipment. Also the pyrotechnics is something we could only dream of earlier. Otherwise it's pretty much the same. We have fun and try to perform well.
What do you think while playing in a concert?
- You don't think much when you play. Playing is mostly a routine, so you just have to react to situations. And when you play, you definitely don't think anything other than the concert, like bills, vacation or dentist.
What do you do the first when you come home from a tour?
- I hug the family and usually turn on the sauna heater. I always miss sauna on tour.
What kind of music do you listen to yourself?
- I don't listen to music very often nowadays. But when I do, I usually listen to radio or my old favourites like Sonata Arctica, Dream Theater, Metallica or Within Temptation.
What is your favourite movie?
- Gladiator. This movie made such a strong impression on me that it may stay my favourite movie forever. In this movie everything is simply perfect. The music alone is an unforgettable experience.
How many tattoos do you have and which one is the most meaningful to you?
- I have taken eight tattoos. Some of them are related to each other, so practically I have five tattoos. The most important ones are the names of my children, Luna and Niki, in my arms.
When you were little, what was your favourite story?
- The Fox and the Hound. I went to the library so many times and listened to its audiobook version. It's a sad but comforting story.
What would you do if you weren’t a musician?
- I would be a businessman. And that’s what I am now, besides being a musician. It’s easy to combine these two works. You just have to handle the details carefully.
Did you ever play with dolls when you were little?
- I can’t remember. Of course, I had some sleep toys, like a tiger and Papa Smurf, but I don’t remember if I ever actually played with dolls. When I was a kid, I was more interested about the wilder things like Robin Hood, Star Wars, rowanberry war, toy soldiers and flashlight war.
Tell something that you do when no one is watching?
- Sometimes, fortunately not very often, I speak to myself. Sometimes I do that also when people are watching, for example, when I'm driving a car and the driver in front of me does something stupid. In situations like that I may yell myself. It'll ease my mind.
Do you believe in life outside Earth?
- Yes I do. But I don't believe in UFOs or aliens in a way they are presented in movies etc. But I believe that there is somewhere out there similar life than on Earth and that they have the same natural laws than what we have.
You have lived in Mikkeli. What kind of memories do you have from that time?
- When I moved away from my parents’ house, my first own flat was in Mikkeli, so it has a certain nostalgia. I was young and handsome and everything was possible. Nowadays I'm just handsome...
